Catfish Po’Boy Recipe

There is nothing quite as satisfying as a catfish Po’Boy recipe. This provides the perfect crunch of catfish, the classic style of a deli sandwich and remains a favorite throughout places where catfish is popular. Getting the recipe perfect can be hard, but this one is guaranteed to make your mouth water.

This recipe calls for a few different parts, but it is so simple that beginners in the kitchen will not have any problems.

1. Coleslaw

The first step is to make the coleslaw that will go on the sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red cabbage, shredded
  • ¼ cups old fashioned mayo
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small mixing bowl.
  2. Mix thoroughly.
  3. Refrigerate for at least one hour.

2. Fried Catfish

While the coleslaw is setting, take that time to cook the perfect fried catfish fillet. You can use any fried catfish recipe that you like, but this is one of our favorites for the catfish Po’Boy recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 catfish fillet
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • ¼ cup cornmeal
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Pour vegetable oil in the bottom of the frying pan and turn the burner on medium-high heat.
  2. While the oil is heating up, prepare the catfish for frying.
  3. Whisk large egg in a medium-sized mixing bowl.
  4. Combine all dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
  5. Dip the fillet in the egg. Make sure that it is thoroughly covered with the egg mixture.
  6. Then, place the fillet in the dry mixture and toss it until it is thoroughly coated in the dry mixture.
  7. After that, check the temperature of the oil. It should be heated to at least 350° Fahrenheit.
  8. Place the fillet in the pan and let each side cook for five minutes.

Different ovens and oil temperatures may call for a slight variation in cooking time. It is important to note that the fish should be a crisp, golden brown on both sides when it is properly cooked.

3. Sandwich

After the coleslaw and fish are done, it’s time to make this delicious sandwich.

Ingredients

  • 1 french roll
  • 1 small sliced tomato
  • 2 leaves lettuce
  • Fried catfish
  • Coleslaw

Directions

  1. First, prepare the bread. Preheat the oven to 350°.
  2. Slice the French roll down the middle to make two pieces of bread for the sandwich.
  3. Then, toast them in the oven for approximately 4 minutes on each side. Leave them in the oven longer if you would prefer harder bread, and for less time if you would like the bread to be softer.
  4. After the bread is done, place it on a plate.
  5. Next, layer the catfish, coleslaw, lettuce, and tomato on the bread in that order.
  6. Place the other piece of bread on top and enjoy!

This delicious sandwich can be served with any side, from mashed potatoes and gravy to french fries. Regardless of what else is on the plate, it will still taste delicious!
