Catfish Nuggets Recipe

Catfish nuggets are the trimmings from fillets that are full of meat. These might not have the same look like a catfish fillet, but catfish nuggets are as delicious as the fillet, especially when they are cooked properly. Some people purchase catfish fillets and cut them into pieces when catfish nuggets are not available. These recipes are guaranteed to make a guest’s mouth water at the mere smell of the catfish nuggets cooking.

Fried Catfish Nuggets

Frying catfish nuggets is one of the most popular ways to cook these bite-sized bits of deliciousness. This recipe will deliver crispy brown catfish nuggets that have the perfect amount of flavor as well as a beautiful golden color.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons thyme leaves, dried
  • Vegetable oil or butter to fry them in
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 medium-sized eggs

Directions

  1. Put oil or butter in pan and heat on a medium to high heat
  2. While the pan is heating up, whisk together the eggs in one bowl until they are thoroughly mixed together
  3. Combine all dry ingredients in separate bowl. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Dip catfish nugget into the egg mixture.
  5. Next, dip the nugget into the dry mixture. Toss until it is completely covered in the dry mixture.
  6. After removing the catfish nugget from the second bowl, shake it gently to remove any excess dry mixture.
  7. After doing this with all of the catfish nuggets, place them in the pan one at a time and cover the pan with a lid. It is important to note that the oil or butter in the pan should be heated to 350 degrees.
  8. Fry them until the outside is a golden brown. Rotating the nuggets and flipping them will provide even cooking.
  9. After thoroughly cooked, remove the nuggets from the pan and place them on a plate to be served.

This recipe tastes delicious when served with tartar sauce, ketchup or hot sauce.

Make it Your Own

This recipe is delicious, but there are plenty of things that you can do to give it a twist of your personal flavor.

  • Spicy catfish nuggets. To add a bit of spice to dinner, include 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper to the dry mixture.
  • Cajun catfish nuggets. To give this recipe some Cajun flavor, add 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning to the dry mixture. Those that prefer spicier food can add more than one teaspoon.

Tips

  • Any oil can be used in place of vegetable oil or butter, such as coconut oil or olive oil.
  • This recipe works well with any frying technique, including blackening and deep-frying catfish nuggets in a deep fryer instead of a pan.
  • Cornmeal can also be added for extra golden color and additional flavor.
  • One cup of spicy mustard in place of eggs will give catfish nuggets a spicy flavor.
  • Put a paper towel on the plate to soak up additional grease if there is going to be a guest with a sensitive stomach.
